Going for a goal

This is not my New Year’s Resolution post. That will come later. But I had a goal of slimming down to 200 pounds by February 6, 2008. Sometime last September I started tracking everything in a spreadsheet, and I figured from that point on that 2/6/08 was the day I should have reached 200 pounds at a loss of around two pounds a week.

As you can see by the table below, taken from my spreadsheet, I was going along pretty well but sort of plateaued about a month or so ago. I think I have had too many fluctuating weeks, and too many “in the red.” The hip flexor injury hasn’t helped, but I think a little more discipline might be needed in the diet.

At any rate, I am not discouraged. I don’t think I can hit the goal, but I am going to make a push at it. Starting New Year’s Day, I am going to go into a modification of the “detox phase” of the diet I started back in August. That first month, I lost 20 pounds. I don’t expect that same loss this time around, but I know I will achieve some benefits, regardless. With a little luck, I will at least get under 220 by then.

Training continues; another one for the log book

Today I managed four miles, and it went well. The hip flexor pain is not as bad as it has been on past runs, but sometimes it doesn’t really manifest itself for a couple of days afterward. I would normally do more miles, but I have decided to do the Hangover Classic on January 1, so that will serve as my long run (ten miles). It felt good to get out and run, and my pace was a little faster than normal because I have taken so many days off from running to help with healing. An additional motivator was the three pounds I have gained over the past week. :)

Here are the numbers for today’s training run, and a route graphic, just for fun. By the way, I track everything using my Garmin Forerunner 305, and I upload everything to MotionBased, which is where the graphic comes from. What can I say, I guess I am somewhat of a geek.

Shooting Southern Indiana

Farm outside of Sellersburg, Indiana, originally uploaded by me.

This blog is not only about my life as a struggling runner, single person, working man, and thinker, but is also about my other pastimes, like photography. Yesterday the sun was shining a bit more than it had been lately, so I decided to venture out and take some pictures with my recently acquired D-80. It is quite a camera, and I am still learning how to use it, as well as the software it came with to deal with the RAW image format I use. Today I posted a few of the shots I took in a new folder at my flickr account called, appropriately enough, Southern Indiana. I will probably be filling that folder up with a lot more pictures, but for starters, I put 14 photos there.

Six Merry Ones

I gave myself a Christmas present today and ran six miles on a beautiful, sunny, crisp winter morning. I think I might just do the Hangover Classic (10 miles) on New Year’s Day after all. It’s a flat ten miles, probably even flatter than the mild run I took this morning. The hip injury pain is still there, but so far, knock on wood, it’s manageable. Life’s been good to me so far.

Injury impact

It’s interesting to note what a difference that the hip flexor injury has made to my burgeoning pursuit of running. Back in August when I finally decided to get fit, I started going to the gym in addition to running and dieting. I have always tried to nuture left-brain as well as right-brain activity, so I noticed the gym (YMCA) had an online facility to track my progress, called FitLinxx. When I use certain strength machines at the Y, it automatically logs my workouts, but you can add cardio sessions separately online, which I have been doing. Their website has a home page where you can compare your current monthly numbers to your previous month. As you can see in the screenshot I took from the site and pasted below, my December cardio is way, way off from last month at this same time, down from almost 16 hours of running last month by this date (the 22nd) to 5.5 hours of running this month. And calories burned is down 16,607 to 6,791.

The good news though is I am still losing weight, just a lot slower. And I still feel a whole lot better than I did in terms of energy capacity. But daggone, getting old has its drawbacks. :)

8 mile training run

Today I decided to run over at Seneca and Cherokee Parks. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the worst, I would say the hip flexor pain is somewhere around 6.5. It definitely hurt more sitting in the car driving back after the run, but once I move around it gets better. Oh well, just gotta continue treating it. At least I am running. It felt great to be out doing it. Even though the weather was quite warm for this time of year, I probably should have worn some thin gloves. My hands kind of felt like icicles, but they warmed up quickly once I got back to the car.

Nine Days?

At long last, I went for a morning run. It has been nine long days since I ran outside. Apart from the treadmill work four days ago, it’s the first real cardio exercise I have had since then. It was a warmish December morning and it was great to be back on the road–despite the ding-dang hip flexor pain! As of this writing, it doesn’t appear to be any worse, but with a lot of other things going on in my life the past week or so, I have not been energetically doing my physical therapy the way I should. I am hereby making a renewed commitment to that. I love running way too much to not make the effort. Even if my running is slow, just getting out there is a blast. It must be the endorphins, huh?

Reflections on a work week

The end of quite a long work week finally arrives. I work in technology, for a small company that creates software used in wireless devices. I am a Quality Assurance Engineer, which basically means I test the software to make sure it is working as designed. But it is really not so simple. There are a lot of “moving parts,” components that allow all manner of electronic things to “talk” to one another. There’s a vast amount of devices to test with. And it’s a fiercely competitive marketplace, so there is always a push to get a release out, to beat out a challenge from another company, to win another client, and so forth.

It’s definitely a young person’s game. Since this is a small company, under fifty employees, I may even be the oldest employee there. Maybe it’s part of what’s keeping me young. Or maybe my youthful approach to life is what’s keeping me in the game. I’m not sure. But one thing I know–It’s not my dad’s engineering environment. He was a chemical engineer who worked for Seagram’s all his adult life. Back in the day, his day, not my day, you worked for one company, and it was for keeps. There was a kind of family loyalty between employer and employee.

Today’s “day,” working at a technology company, is quite different. The place you work can be like a family, but one at which divorce can take place among parents and offspring at any time. Sentimentality, something that to me is quite human and natural, is sadly not part of the world of business. You can have camaraderie, and indeed, if you can play on the team, it’s extremely helpful. But in some work environments, it’s not a requirement. The basic requirement is to work hard, help out, do your best, but be prepared. Be prepared for anything.

So, where am I in all that? I work in engineering because I am somewhat genetically wired to do it. My dad was an engineer by trade, but came from an era where an engineer was thoroughly schooled in liberal arts. My mom had more of a visual artist’s eye. Somewhere in that mix I was brought into the world. So I do my job, and I do it with a certain amount of bravado, but it was not what I trained to do in college. There, I learned what was inside myself, I learned how to bring it out. It happened to be painting, but I knew all along creating art was not going to be the specific way I made a living. I thought I might go about teaching art, or art history maybe, but I also had a sense that work was going to be, well, work. And I knew that specific work was not necessarily going to define me, but that I would define my work. I am old enough now to know that I am not about the pay I earn. I am about many, many things, where I came from, what I do, who I am, who I choose to be with, and what I bring to every moment of being.

Ill-advised run?

For the first time since I began running in earnest this year, I felt as if running this morning, while I am still dealing with my hip injury, may have not been wise. From the very beginning of the run, the pain was quite prevalent. But my compulsion to at least “stay in touch” with running led me out the door. The run was almost painfully slow, but despite the hip soreness and pain, and despite the light, misty rain that stuck to my glasses making it almost impossible to see, I gotta take it for what it was, and at least I was mobile, and out there. On with the show, my PT is tonight.

Woodpecker and Chickadee

Woodpecker and Chickadee, originally uploaded by me.

I have decided to start documenting the various birds I see stopping at my feeders in the backyard. Today is not necessarily the best day, since it is really quite rainy here, but I took this shot of a Hairy Woodpecker and a brave Chickadee through my patio doors. The Chickadee kept darting to the side of the peanut feeder opposite the Hairy, then popping back before the larger bird could take a peck at him. Ya gotta admire the little guy’s spunk.
